We had SUCH a nice time on our Croatian/ Italian adventure. We flew into Ancona (on the back of the Italian 'boot') on Saturday morning and picked up our rental car. We then hit the road, and stopped at Bologna and Padova in Italy. The next day we headed in to Slovenia (another stamp in the passport!) and 30 minutes later, we were in Croatia.
Our first stop was Rovinj, a beautiful seaside port that was part of the Roman empire, so the architecture is just like Venice. (It's only a 2 hour ferry ride to Rovinj from Venice).
We stayed there two nights in a beautiful hotel right on the sea. We kept the doors open to our balcony and slept at night to the sounds of the waves hitting the shore. The weather there was great - about 25 celcius with a nice breeze off the sea
Next stop was Pula, where we saw a Roman Amphitheatre built 3000 years ago. We then hopped on a ferry to the Island of Cres, toured there, then took another ferry to Krk Island, where we stayed overnight.
Up bright and early the next day to hop on a ferry to the Island of Rab. The Islands in this part of Croatia are famous for their colony of Griffons. These wacky very rare birds have a wingspan of 3 metres, and though I spent most of the time staring at the sky, I didn't spot one.
We spent time on Rab and then took another ferry back to the mainland. We made it as far south as Split that day (yes, it was a loooong day). We enjoyed the noise and chaos of Split (and the gelato) and spent a night there in a creepy crackhouse den apartment that we somehow rented from some weird man. It was fine actually, but there is a lack of hotels in Croatia, and so renting private rooms is common.
The next morning we hit the water yet again and took a ferry to Hvar Island. Hvar is probably one of the most famous Croatian Islands and has more sun than any other part of the country. The weather didn't dissapoint, and we spent two nights on Hvar, chillaxing and eating more yummy Italian style food.
Our last day was a bit of a crazy blur. Rob got attacked by an insane black cat that jumped out of a dumpster in Split. Our four hour ferry ride back to Italy turned into a seven hour sea-faring ordeal, and it already seems like the whole week was a dream! More pictures to come! Watch for the one of Jimmy's tiny gelato! heh heh heh.
