This past weekend was a bank holiday here, so we flew off to Glasgow on Friday morning. We picked up our snazzy brand new (only 6 miles on odometre) rental car and headed north in the pouring rain.
We had a great drive through the West Highlands, along the Lochs and at the foot of the 'mountains', including Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK.
We took the bridge to the Isle of Skye and stayed there on Friday night. The sun came out, and it ended up being a beautiful evening. The days that far north are so long, and it didn't get dark until 11:oopm.
We were up bright and early the next morning to catch our ferry to the Isle of Harris. The ferry took about 2 hours, and lucky for us, it was another sunny day, though it was chilly and windy.
We spent all of Saturday on Harris, drove up to Stornaway and marvelled at the stark, bare landscape. When we got to the bottom of the island, we saw some of the nicest beaches - just us and the sheep because it's way to cold to swim and frolic there - plus you'd blow away!
Sunday we ferried to Lewis ,another Hebridean Island, and had a scenic drive there before taking yet another ferry back to the Isle of Skye.
Monday we stayed in the very charming town of Crieff and drove to Stirling (to see the William Wallace monument and castle) before heading back to Glasgow to catch our flight.
It was such a great weekend. Scotland is a very magical place. And no, we didn't eat Haggis... it's offal.
