Riga-Tastic!

Rainy Riga

We had a nice weekend in Riga, despite some miserable rain on Saturday.
It was another one of those strange destinations - I can't honestly say that I ever had Latvia on my list of places to go.

The flight out didn't bode well - it was full of crazy lound menfolk off for stag weekend parties. Riga is one of the latest hot-spots for druken debauchery, so the male to female ratio on the flight was about 10:1.

We arrived on Friday night at about 7:00pm and headed to our hotel. It was right in the centre of the Old Town, which is the 'pretty' part of Riga. From what we saw, the places outside the old town were not very nice.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

Saturday we woke up to lots of rain. Undeterred, we headed to a huge market which is housed inside of 4 old restored Zeppelin hangars. It was pretty cool, and I saw more dead pig snouts and caviar than I ever needed to experience. Luckily, the rain stopped by 3:00 and we had a nice afternoon and evening wandering the streets and seeing all the sights.

Sunday was bright and sunny and mild, so we went to the river and fed the ducks with lovely black rye bread I'd nicked from the hotel breakfast room! Then we hopped on a train and went to Jurmala, on the Baltic Sea - about a half hour train ride.

It was lovely there and was quite fun to walk along the frozen beach. Big pieces of ice were caught up in the surf, and made a crazy noise in the waves. It was sunny and pretty, and a very nice end to our weekend.

So, I don't know that I'd recommend Latvia in my top ten destinations. It wasn't the worst place we've been to, but I would say that we don't need to make a repeat journey in the future!
