It's a special island - one of the most important archeological sites in Greece. It's the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and was first inhabited in the 3rd millenium, BC. The oldest temples and shrines on the island date from 8th century BC, so pretty darn old. It was a centre for trading and commerce, and was at one point where the Greek treasury was kept.
Even though it was all but abandoned by the 3rd century AD, there are lots of houses, temples, and theatres left to explore.
It was awfully hot out exploring the ruins in the sun - not much shade to be had, but it was well worth going to. They had a museum onsite that displayed a lot of the treasures they found on the island, including lots of sculptures, mosaics, and jewellery.
After our morning at Delos, we went back to Mykonos, enjoyed the afternoon there, and then caught the ferry back to Athens.
On Sunday we just wandered around Athens - actually, we staggered around - it was 36 degrees and we were HOT! So, we spent a lot of time sitting at cafes, under umbrellas, drinking icey drinks!
It was very hard to say goodbye to Greece - we have been wishing that we'd gone there sooner, so we could have made a few trips there while we've been living in England. It's a very special country, and one that I know we'll go back to!
Alritey - that's my marathon posting adventure done! Except now I must go and post a Happy Canada Day message!
